Now have your students write down as much as possible about their selected experiences. The goal is just to get thoughts and ideas on paper. Today, kids have completed brainstormed lists of thoughts and ideas as a preliminary step to writing a personal narrative, plus a detailed picture to boot!
How should the narratives begin? Describe it in detail. Have each group write together, creating a detailed paragraph describing the experience. Now divide students into groups of three. Many students leave blank spots on their hearts so they can fill them in as the year goes on.
Tucking away my books, I ran outdoors to join the neighborhood ball game. How did the experience end? The goal is not to generate correct English sentences at this stage.
To help out these students, along with all the others, I use a few different graphic organizers that have made a world of difference to my young writers.
Now read the following aloud: Who was with you? Now, using the same question outline above, have your students complete their own narratives. Can the events be broken down into main ideas? Assign the same general topic to the whole class.
Each student draws a heart, then divides it into sections based on what matters most to them: As a class, brainstorm common experiences. Think aloud as you write on the board or overhead projector. When finished, read the paragraphs aloud. How is each passage different?
As you can imagine, when you are 8 years old, there are not a whole lot of things you consider yourself an authority on, and many of my students never really seem to make a connection with their list.
